“Did it ever happen to you that you had an idea that you thought was very good? Did you ever think to yourself “this could be great for a startup”? How many times have you thought of something but then went back to your daily routine?
A year ago, I finished my PhD and I was thinking what to do next. Like many people, I had an idea but I was not sure what to do with it. A friend of mine that had enough of hearing me talking about things but never doing anything with them, forward me a mail that Biztec, a competition for students’ ventures, is opened for applications. I never participated in anything like this before and I didn’t know what to expect. Nevertheless, I applied and this one of the best decisions I ever made.
It was clear to me from the first meeting that Biztec’s and the Yazamut center wonderful team is committed to help me transform from a student to a CEO of a company and I can promise you this is not an easy task. Coming from academia I was surprised how little I know about startups; words like due diligence, cap table and USPTO did not mean anything to me. The beautiful thing about Biztec’s program is that they do not expect you to know how to start a company, they teach you how to do it. First they teach you the basics – the terminology, the “must know” of the field, and then they match you with a mentor. We were fortunate to have a great mentor (Amir Lev) who was always there to help when we needed and was willing to answer any question (and we had many).
Today, two month after the Biztec program ended, I can proudly say that I am the CEO of Wiztags (http://wiztags.com). Wiztags is not an idea anymore. Wiztags is a company that creates maps that provide the location of each product in the store. Yes, it is a very small company and we still have a long way to go, but everyone has to start somewhere. I started at Biztec. How long are you going to wait before you start?
Even great ideas need help. Apply today.”
